Salesian Spirituality: Joyful Holiness in Daily Life

Mary Help of Christians, Don Bosco and Sr. Mary Domenica Mazzarello
Mary Help of Christians was Don Bosco and Sr. Mary Dominica Mazzarello's constant companion and guide.
They invited young people to trust Mary as a mother who leads us to Jesus and protects us in difficulties.
She teaches us to notice God’s help in everyday life.
Salesian spirituality is simple: God is near; joy is possible; you are loved; your life has a mission.

Don Bosco (1815–1888) befriended poor and working youth in Turin.
He created places where they felt loved, learned a trade, and discovered God’s dream for them.
His secret? A fatherly presence and a faith that smiled.

Mary Dominica Mazzarello (1832-1881) befriended children and girls of her village, Mornese, with the aim of teaching them catechism but also  a job.   Together with some of her friends she started a dress-making laboratory  which attracted many girls but also her personality did the same.                               By the 5th august 1872, with Don Bosco's blessing, Sr. Maria Domenica and 7 other ladies made the first profession and started the "Institute of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians" (Salesian Sisters)

Practices that Sustain Joy
Build a simple weekly rhythm:
  • Prayer (Daily): 10–15 minutes of Scripture or silent prayer. Try the Daily Examen at night.
  • Friendship (Weekly): Meet a friend or small group to share highlights, struggles, and a prayer.
  • Service (Monthly): Volunteer locally; notice Christ in those you serve.
  • Celebration (Weekly): Sunday Eucharist and one life-giving activity that brings joy.

Tip: Keep it gentle and steady. God works through simple, consistent steps.
Salesian Family and Vocations
The Salesian Family includes Sisters (FMA), Salesians of Don Bosco (SDB), lay groups, and friends who share Don Bosco’s mission for youth. Each path lives the same spirit in a unique way: presence, accompaniment, and joy.
