Vocation & Discernment

Christian discernment is a relationship-driven way of choosing with God.
It is about learning to listen, growing in interior freedom, and responding in love for the good of others.
In the Salesian spirit, discernment is down-to-earth: it happens in daily life, in friendship, and in service with joy.

What helps? Prayer that is honest and regular, a humble heart, and the support of a faith community. We do not chase perfect certainty; we seek faithful steps. Over time, God’s gentle light brings clarity and peace.

The Stages: Notice • Interpret • Choose
Learn to notice your inner movements, interpret them with the Gospel and good counsel, and choose freely for greater love. Consolation tends toward faith, hope, and love; desolation toward discouragement—don’t decide in desolation. A mentor can help you listen well.
Simple rhythms keep the heart open to God:
  • Lectio Divina: 15 minutes with the Gospel each day—read, reflect, respond, rest.
  • Daily Examen: Review your day with gratitude and notice where God drew you to life.
  • Eucharist: Sunday as a minimum; weekday Mass when possible nourishes love.
  • Reconciliation: Regular confession restores freedom and courage to choose the good.
Start small, be consistent, and let joy grow.

Good choices bear good fruit: deeper faith, hope, and love; peace that endures; and a desire to serve.
Freedom grows when fear, pressure, and perfectionism loosen their grip.
Test a choice by living it in small, concrete steps, sharing honestly with a trusted guide, and watching the fruits over time.
